Strengthening Representative Democracy
Through its domestic and international programs, FMC seeks to capitalize the unique experience and skill set of former legislators in democracy building and parliamentary strengthening missions. With the expertise of having served in office, former Members of Congress prove to be valuable sources in post-election and democracy building work. FMC partners with NGOs and other organizations to carry out democracy and legislative strengthening work around the globe. Programs to assist emerging democracies have sent former Members of Congress abroad and have hosted visiting delegations in the United States.
The Congressional Study Groups on Germany, Japan, Turkey, and Europe involve current Members of Congress in an ongoing dialogue with elected representatives in governments abroad.
The Global Democracy Initiatives (GDI) provides assistance to emerging democracies via election observation and legistlative strengthening programs. Other programs to assist emerging democracies have sent former Members abroad and have hosted visiting delegations in the United States.
A Network of Overseas Former Legislators Associations connects FMC members with their peers in like-minded organizations across the globe.
