December 3rd – Life After Congress Seminar
“Life After Congress” seminar on Monday, December 3, from 9:00am-12:00 noon in the Congressional Meeting Room South, of the Capitol Visitor’s Center. This program is designed to provide helpful information from former Members and House offices on both the logistical and personal facets of the transition out of office.
The Seminar will offer presentations from offices such as the Office of Member Services, the Office of Budget and Projects, Office of the Clerk and the Office of History and Preservations. In addition, a number of former Members will be available to address the many professional and personal decisions after transitioning.
The “Life After Congress” event is one of the Association’s many projects. FMC—open exclusively to former Members of the House and Senate—is nearly 600 Members strong, and thrives on its members’ commitment to public service. The Association’s list of activities is varied, covering a broad spectrum of educational programs. Our Congress to Campus Program, for example, is one of our most important domestic educational efforts. Since 1976, bipartisan teams of two former Members of Congress have traveled to colleges across the United States and overseas to share their first-hand experiences of their time in Congress with students, faculty, and community representatives. This program inspires a passion for and a better understanding of civics, fostering the spirit of public service in future generations.
Association members also have the opportunity to participate in many other activities both at home and abroad. The International Election Monitors Institute, established in 2004, has sent numerous former Members around the world to monitor elections in budding democracies. It has been expanded to the Global Democracy Initiative to include legislative strengthening work in its scope. Additionally, Association social events provide members a chance to reconnect with our annual meeting in Washington, DC our Annual Statesmanship Awards Dinner (scheduled for March 19th, 2013) our Congressional Charity Golf Classic, and our annual study tours abroad. We also strive to keep Association members up-to-date and in-touch with a private online directory, an electronic newsletter, and a webpage that lists our members’ recent publications.
Many Former Members, in recognition of the worth of our programs, make contributions to help ensure their continuation. As a non-profit and tax-exempt organization, we rely on the generosity of these gifts and many Former Members make contributions from their leftover campaign funds.
