CSGG: 2017 District Directors Study Tour (March 17-23, 2017 | Stuttgart, Germany)

In March 2017, The Congressional Study Group on Germany will organize the 2nd Annual District Directors Study Tour in Stuttgart.

District Directors are senior staff members of the US Congress, who typically do not have a counterpart in the German Bundestag. They oversee all operations for a Member of the House of Representatives in his or her elected constituency or “district.” The District Director travels within the district to keep abreast of local concerns and represents the Member in the district in interactions with residents. In this role, they function as a mediator – bridging the gap between the national policy and the interests of the public. As Members of Congress spend more and more time in their districts and less time in the Capitol, District Directors have become even more important.

The District Directors Study Tour therefore provided an exciting new opportunity to build transatlantic relationships at the regional and local levels of government and civil society, beyond the political and financial capitals of Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich.

The Inaugural Study Tour visited Hamburg in June 2016, a thriving center of international commerce, trade, and publishing. Together with a variety of leading officials and experts from academia, civil society, industry, the media, and government, delegates had the opportunity to discuss topics of mutual concern and opportunities for innovation.

This program is made possible by a three-year grant from the Transatlantic Program of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through funds of the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in accordance with the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (22 U.S.C. § 2458(a)).
