The Congressional Study Group on Japan convened a luncheon discussion featuring Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who serves as The Congressional Study Group on Japan’s Republican Senate Co-Chair. The event focused on the rebuilding effort and national mindset in Japan in the aftermath of the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the resulting tsunami, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Speaker Dennis Hastert, Honorary Co-Chair of The Congressional Study Groups, served as host, and Ambassadors Kenichiro Sasae of Japan and Ritva Koukku-Ronde of Finland were in attendance.
Speaker Hastert welcomed everyone and gave special thanks to the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, and to the Business Advisory Council of The Congressional Study Groups which support program activities such as this luncheon. He also gave special recognition to the two Ambassadors in attendance, who are both members of the Diplomatic Advisory Council of The Congressional Study Groups.
Senator Murkowski visited the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant and a coastal village of Rikuzentakata during her trip to Japan in January 2013 and shared with the audience her perspectives regarding the earthquake, the Japanese mindset and the future of energy policy…
