2010 Senior Congressional Staff Study Tour

With a federal election in the fall of 2009 and an upcoming election in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Study Group organized a trip to Berlin and Cologne during the 2010 Easter recess for senior Congressional staff.  The trip gave participants the chance to hear about the foreign policy and domestic agendas of the new CDU/CSU-FDP government after the Grand Coalition.  In addition, the European Union’s financial and monetary crisis was a major topic during the Study Tour.  The Rhineland segment allowed U.S. Congressional staffers to learn about the mechanics of German elections and also provided a cultural backdrop spanning from the Gothic architecture of the Dom to the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany with a visit to the home of Konrad Adenauer.
