The Honorable Cliff Stearns President, US Association of Former Members of Congress US House of Representatives, 1989-2013

Congressman Cliff Stearns began a two-year term as President of the US Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC) on July 1, 2016. FMC utilizes the unique expertise of its 600 members to provide pro bono public service programs and initiatives both at home and abroad that to educate about the role of Congress, assist Congress in its international relations, and support emerging democracies abroad, all while providing opportunities for members to stay connected with their former colleagues.

 

Congressman Stearns served Florida’s 6th district for 24 years. During his tenure he gained extensive experience in telecommunications, technology, cybersecurity and international trade. Congressman Stearns was the Republican leader on the Communications, Technology and Internet Subcommittee and was chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, where he enacted consumer privacy and data security legislation. Congressman Stearns was chair of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. As chairman of the Transatlantic Dialogue for the European Union, he was appointed primary liaison between the U.S. House of Representatives and elected members of the European Parliament.  They would meet twice a year to discuss trade, security and environmental issues.

 

Prior to his election to the United States Congress, Congressman Stearns worked for CBS, Inc. and Kotula advertising company in Greenwich, Connecticut. He then started his own company as president and chief operating officer of Stearns House, Inc., which owned and operated motels and restaurants in North Central Florida.  Earlier he was a captain in the United States Air Force and served four years as an aerospace project engineer. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for distinguished service and meritorious achievement and later received the Air Force Association W. Stuart Symington Award, the highest honor presented to a civilian in the field of national security.

 

Cliff Stearns is currently an executive director based in APCO Worldwide’s Washington, D.C., office and is a member of APCO’s International Advisory Council.

 

He is a member of the Board of the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management and is Co-Chairman of the Multicultural Media Telecommunications (MMTC) Council Telecom and Internet Policy Taskforce.

 

Congressman Stearns earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He took courses with Harbridge House Inc. Los Angeles on Advanced Problems in Defense Contracting and with the University of California Engineering Extension at UCLA on space communications.
